It’s not just the digital cacophony of alerts, hot takes, and curated outrage. It’s a deeper, more fundamental noise — the static of fractured narratives, the feedback loop of performative rebellion, the deafening silence where understanding used to be. Our modern ailment is a crisis of discernment. We have forgotten how to listen, not to reply, but to comprehend; not to amplify, but to harmonize.

Yet, the blueprint for healing is embedded in our cultural canon, hidden in plain sight within the songs that have scored our rebellions and our parties. By listening to them anew — not just to their beats, but to their souls — we can uncover a profound parable for our age. This is not a call to retro nostalgia, but a map to a future built on a forgotten skill: the art of tuning into the Quiet Frequency.

The Anatomy of Our Discord

To diagnose the disease, we must name its strains. There is power in numbers. Like all symbols we see them used again and again. The power of 2 gave us computers, a technology no one anticipated to evolve the way it did. We see the power of 3 everywhere. In stories, myth, religion, and spirituality. Here are three anthems, separated by decades, that provide a near perfect dissection.

I highly recommend listening/reading the lyrics of each song as you read my articles now and in the future. I promise you’ll take away more than you expect.

The Witness

The Witness: “For What It’s Worth” (Buffalo Springfield)
Its spirit is Sober Observation. In a time of upheaval, it didn’t scream; it stated. Its power lay in its restraint, in the haunting space between its notes. It was a song that said, “Listen. Something is breaking.” It modeled the first, crucial step in any repair: clear-eyed diagnosis without hysterical amplification. Today, we lack Witnesses. We have commentators, influencers, and pundits, but few voices who can report the fracture without immediately exploiting it.

2. The Pulse: “Electric Avenue” (Eddy Grant)
Its spirit is Rhythmic Power. It took the energy of injustice — the heat rising from the pavement — and channeled it into an irresistible, unified groove. It transformed diffuse frustration into directed motion. It proved that protest could be potent and danceable, that shared rhythm is the precursor to shared purpose. Our modern movements often have the anger but lack the foundational, unifying groove; they sputter with isolated clicks instead of building a collective beat.

3. The Mirror: “Fight for Your Right” (Beastie Boys)
Its spirit is Satirical Revelation. It used the loud, dumb tools of party-metal to expose the hollow posturing of rebellion itself. It was a mirror held up to rage, showing us how easily authentic feeling can curdle into caricature. In our era, where rebellion is a marketable aesthetic and outrage is a currency, The Mirror is our most essential critic. It asks: Is your anger real, or are you just playing a part written for you?

These three forces — the Witness, the Pulse, and the Mirror — are not singing in harmony. They are lost in the noise, shouting past each other. The result is our paralyzing status quo: observant souls grow silent in overwhelm, righteous energy dissipates into fragmented hashtags, and any sincere call to action is immediately suspected of being a commercial or a joke.

The Parable of the Quiet Frequency

Cacophony City

Imagine a city named Cacophony. Its citizens are bombarded by Echoes — distorted, amplified fragments of old arguments, advertising jingles posing as truths, and anguished screams rendered into background muzak. Everyone is shouting to be heard over the Echoes, only creating more noise. The city is paralyzed, its people isolated, weary, and cynical.

In this city live three forgotten beings:

The Listener, who remembers how to be quiet. (My spirit animal)

The Pulse, the deep, distressed rhythm of the city’s heart, buried under the asphalt.

The Echo, a trickster who can only mimic and mock, twisting every sincere sound. (My old nihilistic roguish self)

The citizens try to fight the Echo by shouting louder. They fail. They try to ignore The Pulse. It grows more distressed. Despair sets in.

The Listener does something radical. She stops shouting. She kneels on the ground, places her palm on the hot street, and closes her eyes. She isn’t listening to the noise; she is listening for the vibration beneath it. It is hard to find — a faint, irregular thrum of anxiety, hope, fatigue, and longing. This is the Quiet Frequency.

Tuning into it requires exhausting patience. The Echo mocks her: “How quiet! How passive!” But she persists. Slowly, she begins to hum along, not with the Echo’s distorted shouts, but with the true, ragged rhythm of The Pulse.

A miraculous thing happens. The Echo, whose nature is to mimic the dominant sound, begins to mock her hum. But in doing so, it inadvertently starts to repeat the true rhythm. One by one, exhausted shouters hear this new, coherent sound emerging from the chaos. They too grow quiet. They place their hands on the street. They find The Pulse.

Soon, the entire city is not shouting, but humming — a low, powerful, unified drone that resonates through the foundations. The Echo, now surrounded by this authentic frequency, loses its power to distort and is absorbed into the harmony. The noise doesn’t vanish; it is transformed. The energy that fueled the chaos now powers the city’s light. Cacophony hasn’t become silent. It has become a chorus.

Tuning Your Instrument: A Practical Optimism

This parable is not a fantasy. It is an instruction manual. The future belongs not to the loudest, but to the most perceptive listeners. Here is how we begin to tune in:

1. Cultivate Your Inner Witness (Borrow from the Sober Observation). Before you share, react, or condemn, pause. Ask: Am I describing the fracture clearly, or am I adding to the debris? Practice the discipline of the first line of “For What It’s Worth”: “There’s something happening here / What it is ain’t exactly clear.” Have the courage to admit uncertainty. Clarity is a greater catalyst than certainty.

2. Seek the Collective Pulse (Borrow from the Rhythmic Power). Find the underlying need. Is it dignity? Security? Agency? Community? Your cause is not your slogan; it is the unmet human rhythm beneath it. Like the bassline of “Electric Avenue,” your job is to give that pulse an irresistible, tangible form — through local action, art, or simply a conversation that says, “I feel that rhythm too.” Organize around the groove, not the grievance.

3. Employ the Mirror of Loving Satire (Borrow from the Satirical Revelation). Gently expose hollow posturing, especially in your own camp. The Beastie Boys weaponized irony to deflate toxic masculinity. We can use it to deflate dogmatic thinking, virtue signaling, and the performance of activism. Ask: Are we fighting for the right, or just fighting to be seen fighting? Humor that punctures pretense is a tool of integrity.

The ultimate fusion is this: The Witness identifies the true problem. The Pulse rallies the authentic, shared energy around it. The Mirror ensures the movement remains honest, adaptable, and free of the ego that doomed the very thing it sought to change.

The Symphony Ahead

Our optimism cannot be naive. It must be a listening optimism — a proactive, muscular hope built on our willingness to hear what is real over what is convenient.

The songs of the past were not endpoints. “For What It’s Worth” was a question. “Electric Avenue” was a charge. “Fight for Your Right” was a corrective. Together, they form a chord progression for progress: Awareness, Unity, Integrity.

The future is not a silent utopia. It will be beautifully, chaotically loud. But it can be harmonic. The technology that amplifies our discord can also connect our rhythms. The diversity that fuels our arguments is the very source of our richest music.

The revolution won’t be televised. It won’t even be streamed. It will be hummed. It will start as a quiet frequency in the chest of one person who decides to listen beneath the noise. It will grow as others, weary of shouting, pick up the rhythm. It will triumph not by silencing the opposition, but by offering a melody so true, so grounded in the shared pulse of our humanity, that even the echoes of division will have no choice but to finally, blessedly, find their place in the song.

The first note is yours. Stop shouting. Tune in. And begin.

Originally published on Medium.
