Time to feel good.”

But then the momentum fades. The old patterns creep back. Why is it so hard to hold onto that feeling of a fresh start?

For years, I thought my biggest enemy was outside circumstance. Then I realized the problem was hidden in plain sight, in the very grammar of my thoughts. I was narrating my life in the passive voice.

Things didn’t happen because of my choices; they just happened to me.
“This should workout okay”
“The promotion was given to someone else.”
“My heart was broken.”
“The motivation was lost.”

See the pattern? The active agent — the “I” — was missing. I was a spectator in my own story. This isn’t just a writing quirk; it’s a mindset that silently steals your power. And breaking it is the key to lasting change.

The Metamorphosis Myth: You’re Not a One-Time Butterfly

Franz Kafka’s Metamorphosis should be required reading for high school students. Luckily, some institutions provide samples of great works online for free like UPENN:

We love the butterfly metaphor for transformation. It’s clean: caterpillar, chrysalis, butterfly. Done.

But this is where we get it wrong. Insects metamorphose once. We are designed to transform constantly. Life isn’t a single, grand before-and-after photo. It’s a continuous series of molts, adjustments, and reinventions. The “new you” isn’t a destination; it’s the very process of becoming.

The passive voice keeps you stuck in an old shell. It has you believing your current state — “I am stuck,” “I am overwhelmed” — is a permanent, landed reality.

It’s not. You’re still spinning.

Your Mind’s Spinning Coin: The Physics of Possibility

This is where a powerful analogy from quantum physics helps ground the idea. Think of a decision or a state of being as a coin.

When it’s landed, it’s one thing: heads or tails. Success or failure. True or false. 1 or 0. Happy or sad. This is the world of finality, binary passive voice. “The coin landed on tails. My fate is sealed.”

Now imagine the coin spinning, a die rolling, a spectrum of possibilities.

While it’s whirring, it is neither heads nor tails. It is a blur of both potentials at once. This is the superposition of your life — the unrealized possibilities, the paths not yet taken, the person you are becoming.

The critical insight: The coin spends most of its time spinning. The “landed” state is just a momentary snapshot.

When you say, “I am unhappy,” you’re declaring the coin has landed. Permanently. But what if you’re just in a prolonged spin? What if, by changing your observation — your focus — you can influence where it lands?

From Passive to Active: The Sentences That Change Everything

The shift from passive to active voice is the practical tool to catch the coin mid-spin and guide it.

It’s moving from describing a finished world to declaring your role in building it.

Passive Observation (The Landed Coin):

– “The opportunity was missed.”

– “The argument was started.”

– “I am always chosen last.”

Active Agency (The Spinner):

– “I didn’t prepare for the opportunity.”

– “I reacted sharply and escalated the tension.”

– “I haven’t put myself forward in that group.”

This isn’t about self-blame. It’s about self-responsibility — the ability to respond. It’s the difference between being a chess piece and a chess player. Even in a bad position, a player can look for a move.

How to Start Your New Dawn (Today)

Audit Your Inner Monologue: For one hour, listen to your thoughts. How many are passive statements about your reality (“This is too hard”) versus active statements about your actions (“I’m finding this challenging, so I’ll break it down”)?

Rewrite One Sentence: Take a recurring, passive thought about your life. Physically rewrite it in the active voice. “My weekends are wasted” becomes “I haven’t been planning fulfilling activities for my weekends.”

Ask the Active Question: When faced with a “landed” feeling, ask: “What am I currently spinning?” Feeling lonely? You’re spinning the coin between isolation and connection. What tiny action — a text, a visit to a cafe, joining an online forum — can you take to nudge it toward connection?

The New Day is Built on Active Verbs

That feeling of “a new life” doesn’t arrive because the calendar changed. It arrives when you switch your internal grammar from the passive to the active.

You are not a butterfly who transforms once. You are the constant spinner of the coin, the ongoing author of your story.

The dawn isn’t new because the sun rose. It’s new because you decided to open your eyes, stand up, and step into the spin of your own potential.

Stop narrating your life as a story that happens to you. Start writing it as a story you are making. That’s how you don’t just want to feel good — that’s how you actively begin.

Originally published on Medium.
